Book Tour: Phobic by Cortney Pearson

Book Blurb:

Fifteen-year-old Piper Crenshaw knows her house is strange. It’s never needed repairs since it was built in the 1800s, and the lights flicker in response to things she says. As if those things aren’t creepy enough, it’s also the place where her mother committed murder.

To prove she’s not afraid of where she lives, Piper opens a forbidden door, which hides a staircase that leads to the ceiling. That’s when the flashbacks of the original residents from 1875 start, including a love affair between two young servants. Each vision pulls Piper deeper into not only their story, but also her house. Piper confides in her best friend, Todd, whom she's gradually falling for, but even he doesn't believe her. At least, not until her house gets axed during a prank, and the act injures Piper instead, cutting a gash the size of Texas into her stomach.

Piper realizes her house isn’t haunted—it’s alive. To sever her link to it, she must unravel the clues in the flashbacks and uncover the truth about her mother’s crime, before she becomes part of her house for good.

***MY REVIEW***

Where do I even start? This book totally blew my mind! In a good way, too. I felt completely captivated throughout the entire book, and I could hardly put it down to go to sleep. Phobic is one of those books you can't just read, and set the book down at any point, and still feel able to continue on with life.
Piper, the main female character is well written, and is the kind of character I wish I could give her a huge hug. As a fellow clarinet player, and acne sufferer I totally related to all of her struggles, and then also her sense of joy when ONE of her issues was transferred to her worst enemy. (SPOILERS!)
Phobic had me flinching and double checking every squeak and creek in MY house! I'm not one to read scary books. I've never even finished the first Jurassic Park movie! The nightmares are what get me. This book, didn't give me nightmares, but still scared the tar out of me!!
So in honor of Halloween approaching, instead of rating in stars, I am rating this book 5 Sugar Skulls! Beautifully done, Cortney Pearson!!!

Snippet:

(BTW this is the main reason why I really want to get my hands on a copy of this book! This is pure awesome-sauce!!!)

“I guess a direct approach would probably have worked better,” he says. Then he balls his hands into fists and taps them at his knees. “I have the biggest crush on you. There. I said it.”

“You—you do?” This is absurd. And yet I’m ravenous inside. It’s a challenge to concentrate on anything but him, and I want nothing more than for him to keep talking.

Main Character Casting:

Todd
Played by Zachary Levi. (This picture shows exactly how I pictured him while writing!)

Piper

Saxon Sharbino
(With zits, lol.)

Author bio:

Cortney is a book nerd who studied literature at BYU-Idaho, a music nerd who plays clarinet in her local community orchestra, and a writing nerd who creates stories for young adults. She lives with her husband and three sons in a small Idaho farm town.

***Snippet***

Being back in Aberdeen made Marie’s stomach twist up. She held a rucksack over her back, while she dragged her suitcase behind her. She made her way out of the International Airport with a lengthening step. She kept her eyes hidden behind the safety of her sunglasses. Her heart beat in time with the music blasting through her headphones.
People rushed past her, they went about with their lives and for a moment Marie soaked up being on the threshold of the landmark place in her own history. She stood in the small airport which hadn’t changed a bit and felt her heart race even faster. She stared at the people always in a rush to get somewhere. No bigger feeling of coming home than this. For Aberdeen offered no bigger reminder of the need to work and to achieve a dream.
The place bred drive and challenged its citizens to go after their dreams. Seeing it like it used to be hit her hard and knocked the air out of her chest. She hadn’t thought she’d ever return here. Not when things were about to change so drastically. Her entire world would turn upside down and she’d become lost in it all soon. There wasn’t anything she could do.
She paused, thinking about how Layla’s book would change all of this. Her twin looked to take away the veils of everyone’s worlds, secrets. Tucking her hands into her back pockets, Marie hoped from here she might find away to survive it all.
Up to this moment she did all she could to stay away from Aberdeen, yet this place got inside her skin and tore her back.
Marie fought the greatest desire to run back onto another plane and leave here, but she knew when the news broke of her past, here would be the safest place for her to be. She fought a hard battle to not give into it.
People didn’t know the full story of why she took off out of here when she did. She wore the scars and reminders of what happened here. Her eyes teared up when she looked at the lines of taxis. The signs for Scotland and places she often visited when she trained, competed in dance battles . Created something good.
She knew what went on here couldn’t happen again, history couldn’t be allowed to repeat itself. Marie knew despite everything she couldn’t let her husband back into her life. She lost two men she loved dearly here. Marie still didn’t know why her husband took off into the dead of the night. She remembered painfully well now and she wiped at her tears.
“Marie.” A strong male voice broke into her thoughts and she remembered his warning. The reason why she must return here and do what she got paid to do. She couldn’t help seeing her ex-husband in her mind though. His face the moment he told her he loved her and how she used to believe this would all be okay. The way he stroked her cheek, one last time...
Derek warned her about how they had to do this and they looked to change the way things were, by leading the way. Dancers were stubborn and soon her dance world would be over for good. Layla would see to it when her book came out, and the world would know what mistakes Marie had made. She had wondered how they’d look at her if her secrets ever came out, and now Marie would get an answer to this question.
She held one away from even her twin sister, yet somehow she knew this secret would be coughed up in the book which was designed to make the dance world choose. Make them choose between the old ways and the new ones.

Lizzie Lilac and the Left Socks

 A note from Cheri Chesley:

In honor of all breast cancer survivors, warriors, and those they’ve left behind.

A few years ago, K.C. Rose and I got some devastating news: a sweet friend and mother had an extremely aggressive form of breast cancer. Since I had just launched my first novel into the world, I decided to donate all my royalties for a period of months to the family to help them fight this horrible invader. But it wasn’t enough—we knew we could do more. That’s where the concept of the Lizzie Lilac book was born. This book is not only dedicated to our friend (who is now cancer free!!) and her family, but also to all the families who struggle with this disease. K.C. and I make no profit from sharing this story—everything we raise will go to the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Utah to help them help others.
Thank you for being part of our fight.

Book blurb:

Poor Lizzie Lilac. When one of her favorite socks goes missing, she is determined to find out where all the missing socks go. What she learns is definitely more than she expected.
