Book Blitz: The Children of Wehn by Jennifer Redmile

-->Jennifer Redmile grew up on the beautiful northern beaches of Sydney NSW, and now lives in Geraldton WA with her husband and two gorgeous puppy dogs. She has always been an avid fantasy fiction reader, and always worked with children, so when she decided to write a novel, it was a natural progression to combine the two and make it a children’s novel.

And a fun interview question

How did you come to write this particular book or series?
I had just finished a 10 week contract as a boarding supervisor at a Residential College for teenage kids. After the first week of being home full-time, my hubby suggested I not go back to work and live on one wage for a while. I heard about this writing challenge called NaNoWriMo, where you have to write 50,000 words in a month. As it was October, and the challenge runs throughout the month of November, I started thinking about writing a book. I’ve always been a huge reader of fantasy novels, and I’ve always worked with kids. So I decided to write a fantasy novel about kids for kids. I’m not really sure where the original idea came from, but the story has evolved from what the characters tell me to do next.

Book Blitz: The Crystal Bridge by Charlie Pulsipher

Kaden could use his Egg, a shell of light only he can see, to transport himself across the emptiness between universes to distant worlds, but he’s afraid. This Egg may have saved his life once, but it failed to save another and the worlds it leads to are full of hidden dangers.

Aren’s sight reaches deep into the souls around her, exposing more than she ever wanted to see in friends, family, and strangers alike. When she turns her gaze on Kaden, his Egg responds, sending them spiraling across space and time to a world where dragons, elves, dwarves, and peculiar gods dwell. Separated, lost, and alone in a world on the brink of war, these teens must come to grips with their unique gifts if they ever want to see Earth again.

Back home, a biotechnology company tinkers with the science of reality, hoping to cure death itself, but they awaken something shadowy and powerful, a being imprisoned in the void for millennia. This dark god longs to break free and devour everything, its hunger insatiable. Infinite universes would be consumed. Kaden and Aren must decide if they can save more than themselves.

Can they save us all?

Question and Answer with the Author

1.      How did you come to write this particular book or series?

I have weirdly vivid and well-developed dreams. I simply combined two that felt similar at the time. I don't think I realized how hard it would be at the time, but the end result is worth all the late nights and long arguments with my characters.

2.      What is your favorite late night snack?
Does Dr Pepper count as a snack?

Snippet 1:

Kaden reached out with his mind and willed one of the circular images to slide along the shell until it hovered before his face. He took in this image, a dark blue sky filled with red nebulae that spun over darkened forests as the silver leaves hissed with their own breath.

He waved it away and pulled another image forward. Mountains of broken crystal shimmered beneath three suns as giant insects tunneled through the shards like some insane ant farm. Kaden pulled another image around and saw fire rain down from a blood red sky as wispy shadows sped over the blackened ground, eating ash.

An Excerpt from the book:

June 10
Everything looked the same.
As she looked around the colorful, bright attic room of the Orange Blossom Inn, the very same room where she’d stayed just a few months ago, Mattie Miller felt a curious sense of déjà vu. The same bright quilts decorated the three twin beds. The same rag rugs warmed the wooden floor.
But yet everything was different.
This time, she wasn’t going to be staying with Leona and Sara, her two best friends in the world. This time she was going to be by herself. And instead of preparing to have the time of her life in their girlfriends’ getaway, she was back in Pinecraft for Leona’s wedding. Sara had planned to come, too. Unfortunately, she’d contracted pneumonia and their doctor had forbidden her to travel.
Therefore, Mattie had boarded the Pioneer Trails bus by herself and had passed the time on the twenty-hour journey with the company of a good book and a comfortable pillow and blanket. To her amazement, she’d slept for seven hours and had awoken with the sure feeling that everything was going to be amazing in Florida.
She just knew it.
Of course, it was going to be a special trip because she would get to watch Leona say her vows. But she had other plans, too. Other, secret plans she hadn’t even dared to tell Leona.
Mattie Miller didn’t intend to simply observe a romance. No, this time she was going to have a romance of her own.
During her visit in January, she and Danny Brenneman had grown fairly close. Since then, they’d exchanged a half dozen letters. Though neither of them had declared anything, Mattie was positive that their friendship was ripe for blossoming into something more.
Yes, if all went well, she would be planning her wedding to Danny Brenneman soon. Just like her best friend Leona. Before long, Mattie would be moving to Sarasota, too. She and Danny would have a perfect life together and she and Leona would continue to be each other’s best friend. They’d support one another through their first months of marriage, throw baby showers for each other, and raise their kinner together, too.
Just like they’d always planned.
And now, it was finally all going to happen.
“Are you sure you don’t mind being up here in the attic all alone?” Beverly Overholt, the proprietor of the inn, asked, interrupting her drifting thoughts. “I feel badly that I had to switch you with the two ladies who were supposed to be staying in this room.”
As long as she had a place to stay, Mattie didn’t care where she slept. “I have two good legs, Miss Beverly. Stairs don’t bother me. I don’t think that lady can say the same.”
“I imagine that is true.” Smiling a bit sheepishly, Beverly added, “I canna tell you how surprised I was to see Mrs. Donaldson on crutches. One would have thought she’d have told me that she couldn’t navigate stairs at the moment.”

And now for a quick little author interview!

1. What inspired you to write in the first place?
I have always been an avid reader and used to read during my lunch break when I taught school. One day, when I realized that I had forgotten a book to read, I decided to write my own. That was back in 1999.

2. What inspired this particular book/series?

Ever since I noticed that my Amish friends had tans in the middle of February and heard about Pinecraft, Florida, I knew I wanted to set a series of books there. This little novella came about during the revision process for one of the books. I had cut one of the story lines and wanted to do something with it. I'm so glad my editor let me!

3. How do you spend your free time?

I still read a lot. I also try to see my daughter when I can. She lives in Louisville, which is a two hour drive for me. When we're together, we like to go out to eat and shop. When I'm home, I'll bake. I find baking very relaxing.

4. What literary character do you most relate too?

Boy, I don't know. I never think about myself when I write, and I always think the characters in other books have a far more exciting life than I do! The only comes to mind is that Joan Wilder from that old movie Romancing the Stone. By the time I'm almost done with a book, those characters feel like real people to me.

5. What is the thing you struggle most with when you are writing and how do you defeat it?

I have the hardest time keeping track of details and timelines in books when I write. Because of that, I write notes about every character in a spiral notebook and have a beta reader check over everything. I also sometimes get overwhelmed with my deadlines. When that happens, I try to break up projects into small, manageable tasks. For example, I write ten pages a day, six days a week. Each day, I only worry about getting those 10 pages done.

6. If you could spend a day inside one book, what book would it be and why?

I would probably want to be in a mystery, like Anne Cleeland's Murder in Retribution. I would love to be smart enough to solve a murder and go chase bad guys!

7. Do you listen to music while you write? If so what kind?

I do. If I'm writing a western, I listen to Jason Aldeen. I always listen to Christmas music when I write a Christmas book. I've been currently listening to The Script and The Fray. I also have a bad habit of listening to the same song over and over and over. It drives my dog crazy.

8. What is your writing snack of choice?

I drink a ton of coffee and love those Goldfish Crackers.

9. Which of your personality traits did you write into one of your characters? (Accidental or deliberate)

I am basically pretty shy, so there is always one character who never knows exactly what to say, or who says the wrong thing. That's me. I also love writing about girls who are mothers since I have two children.
