Book Tour: Taylor by Irish Winters

Irish Winters is an award-winning author who dabbles in poetry, grandchildren, and rarely (as in extremely rarely) the kitchen. More prone to be outdoors than in, she grew up the quintessential tomboy on a farm in rural Wisconsin, spent her teenage years in the Pacific Northwest, but calls the Wasatch Mountains of Northern Utah home. For now.

The wife of one handsome husband and mother of three perfect sons, Irish divides her time between writing at home, and travelling the country with her man while – writing. (Seriously, what else?)

She believes in making every day count for something, and follows the wise admonition of her mother to, “Look out the window and see something!”

Some covert missions take place deep inside a guy….

Stoic ex-Marine, Taylor Armstrong, survived his arrogant father and one too many deployments. Battered and disillusioned, he’s built a wall to keep the world at bay. His rule is simple: a man can’t lose a friend he’s never made. It works—until an arrow rips into his chest and changes everything he knew about his father. His mother. Himself….

She never gave up…

Gracie Fox has loved Taylor since the fateful day he was ripped from her life as a four-year old. He has no memory of her or the loving family that was forced to give him up. It seems he’ll never know—until the ancient rite of revenge, the blood hunt, collides with his carefully structured life and drops him into Gracie’s life again. She seizes the chance, determined he will remember….

Even if she has to tie him to her bed.

He lingered less than a breath away, letting her scent pull him in. Desire turned tactile. She lifted onto the balls of her feet. Her hands moved to the back of his neck, her thumbs against his ears. He closed the space, tentatively brushing his lips over hers, afraid where this might lead but wanting desperately to find out.
The delicious warmth of her body quickened his heart, and he was caught in a wildfire named Gracie Fox.

Book Tour: The Shadows Series by RM Alexander

Hello everyone! I first featured this amazing series when books 2 and 3 were released! At the time, I grabbed Book 1: Veil of Secrecy for free, and without the authors knowledge read it all in one night. Then when I found out the author was looking for reviews for the entire series, I couldn't help but sign-up! So while I acquired Veil of Secrecy on my own, Book 2: Dark Crossing, and Book 3: Revelations were given to me in exchange for an honest review. Hope you enjoy them as much as I have! Below, you will find snippets and my reviews for EACH of these amazing books, and then at the VERY bottom, an interview with my friend RM Alexander herself! So please be sure to check out the whole post. Sorry it's so long!
I LOVE THIS SERIES!

Shadows Book 1: Veil of Secrecy

The darkest secrets won't remain hidden.

Rachel Brackett arrives in Sullivan, Montana with simple goals: relocate, settle an estate, and manage her own antique store. Her parents and friends back home called it running away. That’s just fine with her.

Rachel’s curiosity leads her into the forest, and she finds creatures who know more about her ominous heritage than she does. The creatures only exist in nightmares – grotesque mutants and shapeshifters. They seek vengeance for hideous crimes in genetic engineering, and Rachel is the prime target for retribution. While Rachel searches for the truth behind the family she never knew, a bounty hunter stalks her every move. Only Leonardo, a figure shrouded in the shadows, offers protection. A were lion with the perfect blend of human and feline features. Terrifying. Impossible. Alluring.

When Rachel’s home is ripped apart and a friend attacked, it’s clear there is no safe haven. She is no longer running from her past, but trying to survive to make it to her future.

MY REVIEW:
This is a super intense introduction to what you can feel is going to be a huge story. The TWISTS!!! I was left guessing at every turn of this book. In the first book of the Shadow series, it's all about introducing characters and getting the essential relationships that will survive the length of this series established. This is the first time I've ever hear or read about a were-lion or were-cat or what ever you want to call Leonardo, and Alexander did a FANTASTIC job of defining and describing something brand new. NOT an easy task. (I should know, I'm a writer too. Ask any writer, creating the un-known can feel dang near impossible.) BRAVO!!!

5 STARS for VEIL OF SECRECY!!!

Shadows Book 2: Dark Crossings

"Normal" is just a word, and one that no longer applies to Rachel Brackett's life in the Bitterroot Mountains.

Keeping her two lives in Sullivan, Montana isn't easy. Rachel struggles to protect those with the deepest secrets, and the only one helping to keep her sanity intact is Leonardo. When he disappears, Rachel's world tilts on a dangerous axis.

War with the Others is building, leaving Rachel and Justiz in a rush to find Leonardo.

Time is not on her side, and Rachel must find a way of reaching Leonardo, or risk those she cares the most about.

MY REVIEW
In book two, it's all about the struggle. The struggle to survive, and keep secrets, and keep things organized, while convincing the ones you love in both sides of your life that your fine. Rachel is super tough, don't get me wrong, but in this book she is put through the wringer. As the blurb says, Leonardo disappears, and when she finds him, well that would introduce Alexander's insane twist skills. YOU WILL NOT SEE IT COMING!!! Nor will you anticipate the heart breaking and yet beautiful ending to Dark Crossing. I cried from the excruciation pain, and then cried some more at the beauty that came from that pain. READ IT!!!! I'm seriously struggling to keep this a spoiler free review!

5 STARS for DARK CROSSINGS

Shadows Book 3: Revelations
Rachel Brackett is living on the edge, and the view is exhausting.

The lines have been drawn. Rachel searches for ways of setting her adopted family free of the evil caused by Telov's experiments. Winning requires nothing less than full cooperation from all factions, leaving Rachel and Leonardo to unite forces bonded by hate. In the search, Rachel uncovers truths more crippling than any she has known, and threatens all that she has come to love.

The war has arrived, and anything less than success promises to forever poison the beauty of the mountains with the stench of death.

MY REVIEW:
Wow! If you've read my reviews of VEIL OF SECRECY and DARK CROSSING, then you've already heard me cheering Alexander for her skills in honestly surprising me with twists and turns that I NEVER see coming. REVELATIONS is no different. From the beginning I could feel a change in the air, so to speak. I knew something huge was going to change between Leonardo, Rachel, and Justiz. My worst fear was thankfully not even remotely realized, though it came SERIOUSLY close! The end of this trilogy, that has had a gentle theme of romance laced among all the awful drama that is the SHADOW SERIES, is like nothing I could have ever imagined, heartbreaking in its selflessness, and yet perfect. Alexander's development of her characters is the only way she could have pulled off such an exquisitely pieced ending.

5 STARS to REVELATIONS

And now for an interview with RM Alexander!!!

What inspired you to write in the first place?

Robin: Oh boy! You know, I don't know if there is something that inspired me to write. I literally just picked up a pencil and paper when I was ten years old, started writing and caught a bug for creating stories.

What inspired this particular book/series?

A dream. I kept having this one dream for weeks and weeks on end, and finally, I woke up one morning and starting writing down the notes and character sketches.

How do you spend your free time?

Free time? What's that? LOL! But seriously, I'm a stay at home mom who homeschools. When they go to bed, I work.

What literary character do you most relate too?

Umm...I don't know. I don't think there's one in particular. At different times in my life, I've related to one character over another, but it constantly changes as my life goes in different directions.

What is the thing you struggle most with when you are writing and how do you defeat it?

Writer's block is the plague of writing. LOL! When it hits, and it does with every book, I pick up another book and read a paragraph, a page, a chapter. Whatever it takes to get those juices flowing.

If you could spend a day inside one book, what book would it be and why?

Pride and Prejudice. I just want to see the time period in person for a few minutes.

If your book was made into a movie, who would play the main characters?

Rachel would be Nina Debrov, Justiz would be Jesse Metcalfe. After that, I'm not sure. Leonardo would be so hard to cast, but I'd love to see who the producers would see the role.

Do you listen to music while you write? If so what kind?

Most of the time, yes, I do. The kind of music changes with every book. With the Shadows series, I really couldn't find anything that worked until I wrote Revelations. Then I found some great mood music and natural woods sounds.

What is your writing snack of choice?

I actually don't have one. Since I do my writing at night, the most I usually do is drink a bunch of water. LOL!

Which of your personality traits did you write into one of your characters? (Accidental or deliberate)

My love for nature tends to bleed over into a lot of my books, as well as my love for traveling. Other than that, I can see different parts of me in each of my main characters, but I won't tell you what.

****GUEST POST****

Hello, I’m J. A. McLachlan, the author of The Occasional Diamond Thief. I’m so pleased to be meeting you, and I’d like to thank S.E. Daley for having me here on Semi Short Chic today. This blog tour is part of my online launch of The Occasional Diamond Thief, and I’ll have something different at each stop – book excerpts, author and character reveals, vlogs, reviews and blog posts – for you to enjoy. You can find The Occasional Diamond Thief at: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NF9NYJM

Summary from Goodreads:

The Occasional Diamond Thief is the tale of Kia, who is courageous and practical with a quirky sense of humor, and a loner.

When 16-yr-old Kia is training to be a translator, she is co-opted into travelling to Malem. This is the last place in the universe that Kia wants to be — it’s the planet where her father caught the terrible illness that killed him — but it’s also where he got the magnificent diamond that only she knows about. Kia is convinced he stole it, as it is illegal for any off-worlder to possess a Malemese diamond.

Even worse, Kia must translate for Agatha, who is as different from Kia as it's possible for two people to be - Agatha is idealistic, naïve, and compassionate.

Using her skill in languages – and another skill she picked up, the skill of picking locks - Kia unravels the secret of her father's mysterious gem and learns what she must do to set things right: return the diamond to its original owner. But how will she find out who that is when no one can know that she, an off-worlder, has a Malemese diamond? Can she trust the new friends she’s made on Malem, especially handsome but mysterious 17-year-old Jumal, to help her?

And will she solve the puzzle in time to save Agatha, the last person she would have expected to become her closest friend?

Book Excerpt:

(This excerpt from the novel describes Kia’s first meeting with Jumal.)

The day is cold and overcast again, raining off and on in short, angry bursts. In the three days we’ve been here there’s been as much precipitation as we get in a year on Seraffa. I go out anyway, hoping to walk off the bad feeling I have, and trudge down the muddy road, flapping my arms to keep warm.

I stop when I realize I must look like a duck in the rain. Too late. I’ve already emerged from Prophet’s Lane onto the cobblestone street, and a guy about my age is staring at me as he walks past, his lips curved in a mocking half-smile. I stare back, partly because he’s being rude, and partly because he’s worth staring at: tall and slim, with high cheekbones and dark eyes framed with long, dark lashes my college roommate would kill for.

“Quack,” he says, laughs, and keeps walking. I stand there, trying to think of a clever reply to shout after him, but all my four-and-a-half languages fail me. I turn and walk in the opposite direction, feeling exactly like I must look: not just normal stupid, but major moronic.

Book Tour: Mysteries of Cove, book 1: Fires of Invention by J Scott Savage

***Author Note***
Like many of my books, the inspiration for my new series Fires of Invention came from the collision of two ideas. The first time the story occurred to me was while I was watching the musical Wicked with my wife. The moment I walked into the theater and saw the huge mechanical dragon above the stage, I thought, Wow! I have to write a story about that! A few weeks later, I was talking with my nephew, who is probably the most creative kid I know, but whose inventiveness often gets him into trouble, and I thought, What if a kid who had the talents of my nephew lived in a world where creativity was against the law? What if the kids were building . . . a steam-powered dragon? Bam! I had my story.

Powered by great feedback from my agent, Michael Bourret, my good friend and author James Dashner, my publisher, Chris Schoebinger, and the song “Warriors” by Imagine Dragons, I wrote the entire first draft of the first volume in the series, Mysteries of Cove in four weeks. This book is unlike anything I have ever written. There are elements of City of Ember, Dragon Riders, and Hugo in it all mashed up together in a world I fell in love with from the moment I started writing.

I think what’s most exciting to me about this book is that it’s about giving yourself the freedom to imagine. To take chances. Too often we limit ourselves by only trying things we’re confident we can succeed at when what we need to do is give ourselves permission to fail. Often it is when we attempt things with no idea of how we can possibly pull them off that we achieve our greatest successes.

Book Description:
STEAMPUNK! Plus Dragons!
Trenton Colman is a creative thirteen-year-old boy with a knack for all things mechanical. But his talents are viewed with suspicion in Cove, a steam-powered city built inside a mountain. In Cove, creativity is a crime and "invention" is a curse word. Kallista Babbage is a repair technician and daughter of the notorious Leo Babbage, whose father died in an explosion-an event the leaders of Cove point to as an example of the danger of creativity.

Working together, Trenton and Kallista learn that Leo Babbage was developing a secret project before he perished. Following clues he left behind, they begin to assemble a strange machine that is unlikely anything they've ever seen before. They soon discover that what they are building may threaten every truth their city is founded on-and quite possibly their very lives.

Author Bio:
J. Scott Savage is the author of the Farworld middle grade fantasy series and the Case File 13 middle grade monster series. He has been writing and publishing books for over ten years. He has visited over 400 elementary schools, dozens of writers conferences, and taught many writing classes. He has four children and lives with his wife Jennifer and their Border Collie, Pepper, in a windy valley of the Rocky Mountains.

I'm so excited to help out with this fantastic cover reveal! But first things first. What's the point of checking out a fabulous new cover, if we aren't already super intrigued by what the book will be about?

Holding Court
by K.C. Held

Release Date: March 2016

Entangled Teen

Summary from Goodreads:

When sixteen year-old Jules Verity, who suffers from what her best friend calls “Psychic Tourette’s Syndrome” (spontaneous outbursts of seemingly absurd prophecies that she can’t control) takes a job at a castle turned dinner theater known as Tudor Times, all she wants is the chance to make some money, wear a fancy gown, and ogle gorgeous-but-taken Grayson Chandler from afar. Instead she’s forced to wear the most mortifying costume ever, stumbles over a dead body that promptly disappears, and becomes a suspect in a jewel forgery scam.

Determined to prove she’s not a total freak who hallucinated a dead girl, Jules goes looking for answers in the secret passageways of Tudor Times. At first she’s thrilled when Grayson volunteers to help her on her quest to find a dead body, but his sudden interest in spending time with Jules becomes suspicious when she discovers his girlfriend may be guilty of a lot more than perfect hair and fabulous cleavage.

And if she can’t unveil the truth in time, wearing an embarrassing costume and her psychic outbursts will be the least of her problems.
