Book Tour: Breached by John Hohn

Author Bio:

I am a Midwesterner by birth. Yankton, South Dakota, is my hometown. I graduated from high school there in 1957. After four years earning degree in English at St. John’s University (MN), I became a teacher. My first wife, Elaine Finfrock, also of Yankton, and I had five children; four sons and a daughter. We divorced in 1977.

In 1964, I joined The Travelers in Minneapolis, MN and began what turned out to be a 40 year career in the financial services industry. During the that time, in addition to The Travelers, I held positions with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Minnesota, Wilson Learning Corporation, and Wachovia Bank and Trust. While at Wachovia, I served in many different positions, ending my tenure as a representative of the trust department services in the greater New York City area. I retired at the end of 2007 after 15 years as a Financial Advisor with Merrill Lynch serving over 300 clients in the Winston-Salem, NC area.

In 1986, Melinda Folger McLeod and I were married and I gained a stepson, Matthew. Currently, we divide our time each year between our cabin New West Jefferson, NC and our cottage in Southport, NC near the Cape Fear River. I enjoy golf, music, and reading history. Since my retiring I have focused on my writing, an avocation throughout my life. In 2010, I completed my first novel, Deadly Portfolio: A Killing Hedge Funds and the sequel, Breached was published August 2014.

Breached

Back cover blurb:

Following his critically acclaimed debut novel, Deadly Portfolio: A Killing
in Hedge Funds, author John J. Hohn offers Breached, a suspenseful,
fast-paced sequel.

The story is set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina where Detective James Raker meets up with an old high school classmate.
Their reunion, however, is interrupted by murder. Gunned down is state dam inspector Norm Dennison who dies before he can prove to the homeowners around Lake Hannah that Vernon Brost, a developer, has launched an elaborate scheme to defraud them. The threat to Brost’s plans does not go away with Dennison’s death, however, as Dennison’s widow turns over the dead man’s files to Art Nichols, a Lake Hannah resident and a friend of the retired detective, James Raker. Thugs ransack Nichols’ home to recover the documents. Not finding them, they decide to break into Raker’s home where they are surprised by Raker’s girl friend, Diane Welborn. Welborn is knocked unconscious and the house is set ablaze. Together Nichols, a Viet Nam veteran, and Raker begin tracking down the intruders. Welborn is hospitalized in serious condition. While in a coma, she recalls her painful childhood, her unsuccessful fi rst marriage and her struggles to find fulfillment after her divorce. Raker’s concern for her injuries drives him in his pursuit of her attackers.

Breached is a fast-paced realistic literary mystery with a sharp focus on

character development.

Snippet:
“That’s funny. I don’t think your supervisor knew you quit.”
“I can’t help what he knows and what he don’t know.”
“Your supervisor said you’re supposed to call in when you’re absent.”
“I wasn’t absent. I quit.”
“He thought you’d probably show up and file a workmen’s comp claim because of the accident happened your last day on the job.”
“I ain’t filin’ no claim. I got hurt. It was my fault. I quit. I ain’t going back there for anything.”
“So nobody at the plant knew you had quit, right?”
“How would I know?”
“How did this 308 Winchester come to be in your place?”
“Bought it at a gun show, Hillsville, Virginia.”
“You bought it there?”
“Yeah.”
“That expensive scope on it when you bought it?”
“Yup. Package deal.”
“What about the Glock?”
“Found it.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. Someone must’ve been out target practicing with it. Laid it down and walked away from it.”

“Seems like an expensive gun to walk off on?”

Book Tour: Pushing the Wall by James Duckett

Author Bio:

James loves to write, but he doesn't like to brag. Just kidding, he totally loves to brag. And refer to himself in the third person. Because both those things are cool. Right?
Right?
James Duckett is a founder and Chief Technology Officer of the Authors' Think Tank Facebook Group and Podcast. He wrote his first story in the 2nd grade and has been excited about writing ever since. He wrote his first book when he was 14, but one of his friends did the world a favor and accidentally threw it away.
“Pushing the Wall: A Memoir” is his first book. A contemporary romance (yeah, you read that right) novella will appear in an anthology on March 31st, 2015. He's introverted, geeky, funny looking, unpredictable, and easily distracted by the latest gadgets.

Book Blurb:

What kind of idiot would run a marathon without training for it first? Me.
Sure, I’d heard all the horror stories. Endurance athletes always fear “hitting the wall,” that point where the body runs out of energy and, BAM! Roadkill. With no conditioning, I feared smashing into this wall hard enough to leave a dent.
I wanted to train for the 2010 St. George Marathon, but after breaking my foot, the only marathon I could handle was on Netflix. When the race came, I just wanted to pick up the shirt I paid for, but peer pressure and the energy of the other 7,000 runners convinced me to go for it. My plan? Push the wall past the finish line. Then I could grab some ice cream, crawl into my truck, and drive home.
This memoir details my love/hate affair with running, why I didn’t prepare, and how I survived 26.2 grueling miles that I had no business attempting. This book also includes running tips for anybody looking to maximize their training experience, covering topics like:

  • Finding the right running pace
  • Speed workouts
  • Running safely at night
  • Tapering and carb-loading before a race
  • Basic first aid for runners
  • Injury prevention
  • And more!

It’s whimsical, yet educational. It’s whimsucational!

Foreward by Aaron Metler, winner of the 2010 and 2014 St. George Marathons.

And now for my favorite part of a blog tour! I asked for who Author James Duckett would pick to play the main actor (himself) if his memoir was made into a movie! This is the reply I received.

"Who should play me in a movie? If Chris Farley wasn't dead, he'd be perfect. We both have such amazing bodies and energy! The skit where he's giving advice to some troubled youth after drinking 20 cups of coffee, yeah... I get like that now and then. But, alas, he's not around anymore. So let's give it to Leonardo DiCaprio, because it might be his chance to get an Oscar!

And, you are going to love this, the foreward to my book was written by Aaron "McLovin" Metler. His nickname is McLovin because he looks totally like an actor named Christopher Mintz-Plasse. He did some movie where he got a fake ID that read McLovin, and Aaron and him could be twins. I haven't seen the movie so I can't comment on mannerisms or anything, but he's got a poster of him hanging in the office and it is hilarious!"
